CHAPTER 1
The Role of Public Speaking
Communication is a central characteristic of human beings; our brains are hardwired to develop language and seek social interaction. So it is not surprising that humans also have a long tradition of studying communication, how it works, what makes it more or less effective, and how we can improve our communication skills. In this chapter, you will read about some of the history and tradition of public speaking, key principles of thinking and listening that support effective communication, and the basics of the communication process. These core concepts will lay a strong foundation for you to build on as you develop your communication skills.
