CHAPTER 2

The Ethics of Public Speaking

The National Communication Association is the most influential communication association in the United States, with a membership of more than 8,000 communication scholars and practitioners (Abbott, Timmerman, McDorman & Lamberton, 2016). In 1999, the association published its Credo for Ethical Communication that outlines ethical communication behaviors in the public and private spheres of communication. This credo provides a great overview of the implications and practices of ethics across the field of communication.
